USER GUIDE FOR THE NATIVA-TRAP-TECH SELECTIVE TRAP FOR VESPA VELUTINA CONTROL

OBJECTIVE OF OUR TRAP

  • To create a support network between beekeepers and the general public in the fight against the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina).
  • In already affected areas, our aim is to reduce the number of nests annually through early and selective trapping.
  • In unaffected areas, the trap serves as a tool for early detection, with minimal impact on non-target species.

TRAP COMPOSITION

SETTING UP THE TRAP

  • Prepare the Attractant Container:
    • Unscrew the yellow plug from the attractant container attached to the main body of the trap.
    • Unscrew the white plug from the secondary attractant container, which contains the diffuser cloth.
  • Add the Attractant Mix:
    • Pour approximately 2 cm of concentrated attractant into the container.
    • Sprinkle about one teaspoon of dry baker’s yeast over the attractant.
    • Fill the container with room temperature water (never above 35ºC) up to 2 cm from the top.
  • Seal the Container:
    • Reinsert the white plug with the diffuser cloth.
    • Screw the attractant container back into the main body of the trap.
  • Fill the Feeder (Optional):
    • Add water to the feeder.
    • Optionally, add a bit of sugar or concentrated attractant (without yeast).
    • Close the feeder tightly to prevent spills.
  • Install the Trap:
    • Hang the trap using the wire in a bright area with minimal direct sunlight - ideal locations include: under a tree canopy, on a terrace, beneath a porch.
  • Maintenance:
    • Replace the attractant every 1 month.
    • Allow 1 to 3 days for fermentation to begin and the attractant to become effective.
